These days, carbohydrates are considered evil and responsible for the weight gain that has plagued western society. This is a two-fold argument. While carbohydrates can lead to weight gain, it’s usually due to overeating them, wrong carbohydrate choices, and/or lack of protein and essential fats for balance.

Have you ever eaten a good spaghetti dinner that left you feeling full and satisfied, even a little sleepy? Then suddenly, from no where you are literally starving again with a roaring appetite for more carbohydrates? It seems that big meal left you quicker than it went in.

High starch foods, such as bread, pasta, dairy, and potatoes (carbohydrates breakdown into sugar) stimulate the production of serotonin from the brain. This interesting hormone is responsible for suppressing your appetite and elevating your mood, as it produces a calming effect, making you feel content and happy. It also reduces pain and induces sleep. Yes, a powerful macronutrient carbohydrates are and if it is and if it was bottled, it would probably be a scheduled drug.

Sugar is along the same line as anti-depressants. Both increase serotonin production in the brain. The urgent need for it produces feelings of anxiousness and once it is consumed, all the anxiety is relieved, leaving you in a content state. When the serotonin level drops again, a gloom feeling takes over and the need for more sugar is triggered. Can you see how sugar and carbohydrates can be addictive?

Those who are sugar dependant have the same dependency as those who are addicted to drugs, alcohol, smoking, and gambling. The sugar need provides immediate gratification and the person feels they cannot live without this “necessary” substance. When in reality, the sugar injection is only playing mind games with the individual, keeping them on an emotional rollercoaster.

Gaining Control

You can gain more control of this situation if you feel like you are a hostage to sugars effects. Proper nutrition, water, and supplementation can all aid in control.

Nutrition

Contrary to popular belief, you can have your carbohydrates and eat them too. Proper nutrition is most important. With nutrition comes, choice, balance, combination, and portion control.

Your best carbohydrate choices would be natural ones from Mother Nature. If you can grow it, pick it, harvest it, or gather it, you can eat it, in limited amounts of course. The key here to remember is to keep it natural and avoid processed carbohydrates sources.

You can have your carbohydrates, however you need to indulge in small amounts and combine it with a complete protein to blunt the serotonin effects. Serotonin is produced when you eat starchy or sweet carbohydrates by themselves or with very little protein or fat. Simply eating a piece of steak or chicken won’t produce any serotonin. Therefore, one way to gain the advantage over carbohydrates is to combine them with a protein.

You also have to be responsible for potion size. A little bit of carbohydrates goes a long way, so a good rule of thumb is to eat an amount the size of your fist.

Water

Water is a precious element which contains many minerals and is the single most important catalyst in losing weight. It is the most overlooked factor in nutrition and health and is the key component to overall wellness.

In addition, water is necessary factor in masking false hunger. Keeping properly hydrated will excrete sodium and fat, aiding in weight loss, and control sugar cravings.

Supplement

Supplementation is the final salvation for sugar cravings. Among these are vitamin B-complex, vitamin C, chromium, inositol, manganese, zinc, calcium, and colloidal minerals. Gastric-bypass surgery is only the first step many morbidly obese patients take in their total body make overs. One residue of massive weight loss is the dreaded “bat-wings”. You know what I’m talking about - that upper arm skin which hangs like bat wings if you spread your arms wide ready for flight. Wave your hand and the bat-wing waves too. For some after massive weight loss there is so much skin it’s difficult to find shirts with sleeves that fit, and worse, it’s embarrassing to wear sleeveless shirts.

What to do?

Exercise:

The first line of defense is to do weight or strength training during the phase of rapid weight loss. Many patients report satisfactory skin shrinkage of the upper arms when they’ve incorporated light exercise during weight loss. Bicep curls and tricep pulldowns are the best exercises for firming upper arms. Arm training takes minimal equipment (2 light dumbbells 3-5 lbs each) and limited space. It should be noted, the younger the patient and the fewer times they’ve seen significant weight change, the better chance they have of toning and shaping their arms with exercise. Now, that doesn’t let older patients off the hook for doing exercise - it just gives a bit more encouragement for younger people who undergo weight loss surgery.

Liposuction:

The next, but not very plausible option is liposuction. Lipo is only appropriate when there is a lot of fat and the skin is tight. The lipo sucks out the fat and allows the skin to shrink. This isn’t plausible for most WLS patients because they’ve already lost the fat leaving an empty balloon of upper arm skin.

Brachioplasty:

The last resort is the $5,000 arm lift called brachioplasty Brachioplasty is a surgical procedure that eliminates excess skin from the upper arm.

Incisions and Scars in Arm Lift

Scars are the greatest drawback of this operation. They will extend from the armpit to the elbow, along the inside of the arm. This operation exchanges one cosmetic problem (loose skin) for another (scars). In general, those with very loose saggy skin are most likely to find this exchange worthwhile. Those with a small amount of looseness will probably not want the scars.

Money is on most everyone’s mind. A couple of years ago, a man cashed in on a large load of options and became a millionaire in one day. He explained how he never realized how much he thought about money every day until he had enough that he would never have to worry about it again. Now he says he gets all kinds of work done and has had a burden lifted that he had never known how much he suffered under!

This story illustrates a common theme for many people because many people are under the yoke of money. Maybe even you worry about it, think about it, ponder over it, avoid it by ignoring the last three month’s of checking account statements and not bringing your balance up to date, or simply hope the problem (overdrawn statements, credit card balances) just go away. And even though you know it’s not the best way to handle finances, you may still do it anyway.

Fortunately, feng shui has ideas and remedies that can help create more energy (read: money) to get your finances flowing again. Try these ideas to see if you can’t stimulate more prosperity!

• What’s in your wallet?

Old scraps of paper, credit cards for accounts you closed two year ago or for accounts you never use? Toss them. And if your wallet is shot, invest in a new one. If you can, select a red wallet to really energize your finances. These are the most auspicious and excellent for generating more money.

Next, be sure your wallet is clean, neat, and organized. If it is close to the start the New Year consider buying a new wallet. Maybe you could request one as a gift every year when the holidays roll around. Make it a part of your standard gift list for holidays or birthdays.

• Clean out old financial files.
Old energy keeps new energy from coming into your life. Do you have old financial information hanging around? If you are hanging on to credit card statements from five years ago, you are probably holding on to too much old financial energy. Usually, items older than 5 years are considered safe to toss. Of course, you shouldn’t get rid of old IRS statements! Use discretion when cleaning out your files and consult your accountant if you have questions.

• Be neat and orderly.
Organize your bills and put them in one place. Make it easy and efficient to pay your bills. It’s just common sense and good feng shui. And don’t just wad money up in your wallet. Treat it with respect and put the bills in there nicely.

• Declutter.
One of the most important things you can do for your finances is simply to clean up. Throwing out junk and getting rid of things like excess paper, empty boxes, and broken items can go a long way toward energizing your home for prosperity. In particular, declutter your SE corner of your home, of your living room, and of your bedroom. This is the wealth sector and if it has piles of junk, then financial chi can’t circulate.

• Enhance your prospects.

• Water, water, everywhere.

Well, not everywhere…only in certain places, really. Water equals money. No water, no money. Consider an aquarium in the North sector of your house, provided it isn’t a bathroom or bedroom. Don’t want an aquarium? Fine, put a painting or print of water, a waterfall, an ocean scene, a picture of turtles or fish….

These are all fine representations of water. Or, if the North is out your front door, paint it black. This is incredible feng shui and one of the few western-style feng shui tips that works especially well. If you paint the door black, consider painting the shutters black too!

Another good water option is to display sailing ships. Display the ships, either in paintings, prints, or figures as sailing into the front door. Those that are not in rough seas are best. Sailing ships represented commerce and were often laden with all manner of precious cargo. In the US, you can often find ship figures at craft stores such as Hobby Lobby or décor stores such as Tuesday Morning and Kirklands.

Why go to this trouble in your North sector? The north represents opportunities and career. If your career advances, most of the time, your earning power does, too. This is why you want to make sure your North sector is well cared for. Gold objects (such as brass items) in this area are also extremely auspicious. Even if your kua number says your success direction is Southwest, I would not miss an opportunity to bolster my North sector. Be sure to enhance both sectors.

• Get more green.

In the Southeast (SE) wealth sector, that is. Put a grouping of 4 plants of varying heights together in the SE corner of your home. If this is a bedroom or bathroom, put them in the SE corner of your living room. Try to select a jade plant as one of your grouping.

These plants are excellent feng shui, provided the plants are attractive, healthy, and well-cared for. If not, these are very bad luck, indeed. If you want, you can use silk plants, but real ones are best. Don’t forget to energize the SE corner of your living room with a beautiful plant. Put this plant in a basket or brass planter.

Don’t forget Dragon Power! Display a green dragon in the East and Southeast for improved income. You can usually find these online or in Chinese or Asian emporiums or markets. Wall hangings or figures of dragons are equally good.

Avoid having metal in the SE sector of your home or living room because the SE represents small wood (growing chi) and metal cuts wood. If the SE has a toilet there, put a large rock in the bathroom and tie it with a red ribbon. This will “press” down the negative energy of the toilet.

• Get financial backing.
Just like putting a mountain at your back in the form of a picture on the wall will help you get more management support from bosses or superiors, a picture of a financial institution can give you good “financial backing.”

Get a picture, poster, or painting of a bank, Wall Street, or other financial institution, and hang it so that it is at your back. Even bars of gold or sheets of money would be good here. This is especially good feng shui if you own a business! Put this artwork behind your register or your desk.

• Check your financial thinking.

That’s right, how you think about money is important. There are lots of books that can help here. Some of the best for addressing the mental side of money are Suze Orman’s. Did you know couples fight more about money than they do sex or children? Money is extremely personal and people get very uncomfortable talking about it.

Do you have “poor” thinking?
Do you believe that there is never enough to go around or that you don’t deserve success and financial security? You should really take a close look at your financial mindset. Consider investing in some books that address your “money mind” — because your attitude is often the source of financial difficulty.

Maybe you just need more
Many times people think that to gain more money they have to continue to find ways to cut expenses, rather than find new sources of income. Sometimes that means finding a new job, asking for a raise, getting a rental property, or taking a small part time job to bring in more money. Consider if there is something you can do to earn more rather than cut out more from your budget.

We all want to have a nice, relaxing vacation from time to time, if possible on a sunny beach in a foreign country. Clients approach me all the time saying, “Tell me what I need to do to market my services.” I ask, “What do you mean?” They say, “Tell me how to blog/podcast/what to say on my website,” (fill in your own specific here). That’s when I know they lack the one thing without which they’ll never really make it.

It’s easy to hung up on details. Marketing advice often makes it even more enticing, promising you phenomenal results if you only do X. The “X” changes every few weeks and usually says more about the person who wrote the advice than what you really need to dod. Since advice is ever-present and ever-changing, for anyone trying to keep up it always feels like marketing is a big overwhelming thing that can never be fully tackled. In this dread, they are both right and wrong.

Marketing methods ARE endless. You can spend a lifetime learning about them, implementing them, collecting data as to their efficacy and tweaking your results. For the service professional (not the professional marketer) it is not necessary to learn them all. So the good news is, while marketing information is endless, your grasp of it need not be complete.

What you really DO need is marketing confidence. It is a key ingredient without which your marketing will fail. Of the over 700 people that signed up for a recent series of teleclasses I did on the subject, nearly every one either during the classes or via e-mail told me the same thing: “I am very confident in life but when it comes time to marketing, I get uncertain and afraid.” In short, they lack marketing confidence. It’s different that regular, “garden-variety” confidence. But what to do to build it up?

The methods I had participants employ were simple and gave results right away.

1. Get serious about what your REAL goals are.

9 times out of 10, your goals are not what you think they are. Going after artificial goals will wreak havoc on your marketing confidence (and, hence, your results) because you’ll never have the steam to keep on going until you get them. If you’re going after goals that don’t make you jump out of bed in the morning and enthusiastically cheer, “Time to get to work on those goals!” (and I’m only half kidding there) then you’re not working on your real goals.

2. Do it, don’t think about doing it.

Probably the most critical thing you can do to build your marketing confidence is DO things. So many service professionals get into paralysis by what they consider the overwhelming job of marketing. That’s when the marketing research overdrive response kicks in. You figure if you just gather enough information, you’ll feel they have a grasp on marketing. Actually, the opposite is true. The more you research, the more overwhelmed you become. The only way to alleviate the overwhelm is to start trying things out and experiencing the results to understand not just what works, but what works for you.

3. Give to get.

Too often in marketing a professional practice, we measure success in terms of results. Results are critical, of course, but in a high-trust exchange, such as happens when you sell a high-ticket service, very often the prospect will not buy on first contact. If you walk away after an initial “no,” or “sorry, not interested,” you are walking away from great opportunities. The practice of giving to get, wherein you demonstrate your expertise by giving people either free or low-fee access to it, is a great way to start building a reputation.

4. Build mastery in your craft. It takes being good to know you’re good.

Very often I hear from clients, “I fee like, ‘Who am I to be charging those high fees?’” Often they want a pep talk when they ask that. Instead, I ask them, “What would it take for you to know without a doubt that you MUST be charging that?” Too often we want to coddle ourselves and others when we don’t feel “good enough.” But in order to really build your marketing confidence, you must be excellent at what you do. So what’s that going to take? How must you hone your skills, what training must you attend, how many people must you work with until you know you’re excellent without any hesitation? Once you know the answer to that, set out a path to accomplish it.

5. Be continuously challenged.

Piggybacking on #4, it helps to get out of your comfort zone at every opportunity. You’ve heard the old metaphor about building muscles with increasingly heavier weights. If you want to be a highly sought-after professional, respected in your field, you need to push yourself all the time. What’s it going to take?

6. Research. Then do it your way.

People seem to have an insatiable urge to “just do a little more research.” While this is great, very often it’s detrimental, as I explained above. So if you must research, please know this. Everyone who gives you marketing advice is telling you only PART of the information. The part they can’t possibly tell you is how it’s going to work for you. So understand that when you read about the great new method you MUST try, or how you won’t be able to make it until you try X, know that may not apply to you. The sooner you take ownership of your practice and your marketing future, the happier and more successful you’ll be.
